Podcast culture

The ubiquitous “Catch us on Apple, Spotify, and anywhere you listen to podcasts” tagline… seems to be commonplace now. And it’s a good thing.

Although I don’t foresee starting a podcast for myself just yet, the idea has been in the back of my mind for several years now. It’s been a matter of learning to edit and finding the right niche for me, and… well, finding time to make the effort. Nowadays with changes to the economy and the increase in time on my hand, it might just be the best time to start something.

2019 to me was the start of the new generation of podcast culture. Writers and bloggers started thinking of new ways to create interactive content, while YouTubers and vloggers started seeing lowered payoffs on their video content. Viewers wanted more frequent and longer content, but creators weren’t getting the same payoff to create the same high intensity content, and thus video content creators have moved en mass to the podcasting space. Bloggers wanted their content out there, but didn’t have the time, skills, or tech to make full blown videos, so likewise, they turn towards podcasting.

I’ve been listening to a handful of podcasts and a few youtubers who have convert to a podcast format. The discussions and interactions between ideas can be so conveniently translated into talk format that it just makes sense to me. It’s almost a throwback to the radio shows of the last century. Radios were among the biggest innovation in human history and it makes sense why we would find comfort in these simplified formats. The voice has an incredible wide range of emotions and cues that allow people to imagine a world beyond.

While video, print, and photographs have opened new doors to storytelling, radio hails back to the oral traditions of the ages. The sounds of music and voices engage an audience in ways that that tickle our senses. This is one of the reasons why I believe that people still enjoy and embrace this new podcast culture.

So next time your favorite creator announces their new podcast, don’t roll your eyes. Give them a listen! You might just find the simplicity refreshing and informative!

I’m always looking for new things to listen to. What are your recommendations and favorites?!
